While reading the various news sources today, It was amazing how many times I read the Governor’s Order was illegal. Governors Order beyond its valid scope. Rules Commission being used as a back door around the NCGA. From my perspective, this hasn’t been about flattening the curve or overwhelming the healthcare system for some time. For Cooper, it's about politics, elections, power, and control.
Shoot it's no longer about reducing death rates or infection rates. Look at the data. It tells the story. Sure total mortality numbers are up, but not by the percentages or rolling averages. Total infections have increased, is that spread or availability of testing? When I look at data sets from DHHS or its naysayers I see the same things. Total number of infections increase with the number of tests given. % of infection to those tested has been hovering at 8% for months. And yep, the total number of deaths remains in the .004% range which is lower than the flu.
I have tremendous respect for those willing to serve in public office. I know first hand how challenging it is. We have good folks who want to do good work. Yep, even some of my friends are Dems serving. They are not bad or evil for the most part. They put their constituents first. They are just confused about the proper role of government. Many of them, of course, comes from the “Nanny State” created with “Great Society” programs. More on that later.
I received a call from a member of the NCGA Friday after my post telling them to fight. He rightfully challenged me saying, “what else do you want? We will lose in the courts.”
Standing on a sidewalk, I reminded him, COVID doesn’t end until a vaccine is widely distributed. We will be required to adapt until then. The science is telling us that seniors and those in compromised health situations need to be careful. Others of us need to take precautions to slow the spread. Like wearing masks (a clean one daily), wash hands, if you don't feel well stay home. If you present symptoms, contact healthcare providers.
North Carolina will not rebound overnight. A switch doesn’t get thrown and everything is back to normal. We will have a slow grind out of this. It will require all hands on deck, ALL hands. That means that the NCGA, the Gov office, and local Boards of Commissioners must be aligned.
So to my friends in the NCGA.......
FIGHT! Sure fight to get in the room. Fight to get a seat at the table. Fight to get the people’s voice heard as we develop a strategy to move forward. Our state Constitution requires that the people’s house be involved. Your constituents want you to get in the room. The Emergency powers granted to the Governor were never intended to go unchecked for more than 45 days. Look at us, Gov Cooper has had tyrannical rule, unchecked authority for 120 days. The decisions may not be different. Sectors of the economy may remain closed, Education options limited, etc. But at least all stakeholders are participating in the process.
I like to quote generals and use war analogies. We know that we need to treat COVID response as a wartime response. Does anyone remember the vote count in Congress for the President”s Declaration of War in WWII? Who remembers the makeup of Churchill’s War Cabinet? That’s right great leaders can get the opposition to buy into the strategy because they have invited their adversaries into the decision making process.
Not so in North Carolina. Why? That‘s easy? Cooper is not a leader. He is afraid of his opposition. Cooper puts politics, elections, power, and control first, not the citizens of North Carolina.
